Today, retired Army Ranger Jeff Struecker joins me on the The 3 Wins Podcast.

Jeff served a critical role in the Black Hawk Down incident in Mogadishu, which occurred during the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia on October 3-4, 1993.

(Jeff was portrayed by actor Brian Van Holt in the 2001 film “Black Hawk Down.”)

At the time, he was a Staff Sergeant and squad leader assigned to Task Force Ranger as part of the U.S. Army's 75th Ranger Regiment. His specific role included leading a convoy to rescue wounded soldiers during the intense fighting.

Despite heavy enemy fire and significant risk, he managed to navigate the convoy through hostile territory multiple times. His efforts were crucial in extracting the injured and getting them to safety, demonstrating exceptional courage and determination.

After retiring from the military in 2011, Struecker, who became a pastor, launched the Unbeatable Army ministry initiative to help people develop resilience, leadership skills, and a strong faith foundation.

The program focuses on:

  1. Faith and Resilience: Teaching participants to rely on their faith and develop mental and emotional resilience to overcome life's challenges.

  2. Leadership Development: Providing training and resources to build effective leadership skills that can be applied in various aspects of life, including personal, professional, and spiritual domains.

  3. Community Building: Creating a supportive community where individuals can share experiences, support one another, and grow together.

Through this program, Jeff aims to inspire and equip individuals to become strong leaders and resilient warriors in their own lives, drawing on his experiences as a Ranger and his faith-based perspective.

Key Takeaways

  1. Finding Faith at a Young Age

    • Jeff became a Christian at the age of 13 after his neighbors shared the gospel with him.

    • Despite growing up in a non-religious family, the simplicity of their message and their willingness to work through his questions led him to surrender his life to Christ.

  2. The Continuity of Experience

    • In the military, there's a tradition of passing down knowledge and experience from seasoned veterans to new soldiers, which Jeff calls the "continuity of experience."

    • This concept is akin to biblical discipleship, where more experienced believers guide and mentor those new to the faith.

  3. The Importance of Trust

    • Trust is the foundation of all human relationships, including in the military, where trust can determine the outcome of battles and wars.

    • Jeff emphasizes the need for men to have one or two trustworthy friends who can hold them accountable and prevent them from making mistakes that could ruin their lives.

  4. The Unbeatable Army

    • Jeff launched the "Unbeatable" podcast in October 2021 with the aim of reaching people who are far from Jesus and may never set foot in a church.

    • Through storytelling and subtle (or sometimes direct) gospel presentations, the podcast seeks to introduce listeners to the abundant life found in Christ.

  5. Loneliness at the Top

    • Jeff discusses the concept of "loneliness at the top," where leaders often struggle with making difficult decisions that impact the lives of others.

    • He encourages leaders to find peers in similar positions who can understand their challenges and provide support.

  6. The Beauty of Para-Church Organizations

    • While the church is the primary avenue for discipleship, Jeff acknowledges the importance of para-church organizations in reaching people who may never enter a church building.

    • The Kingdom of God extends beyond the walls of the church, and organizations like Jeff's Unbeatable Army play a vital role in sharing the gospel.

The Bottom Line

This episode offers valuable insights into the principles of trust, accountability, and discipleship, as well as the importance of finding innovative ways to share the gospel with those who may be unreachable through traditional means.
